Enrollment and Student Registration

How do I determine if my residence falls within Saratoga Union School District boundaries? If I live in SUSD, which school will my child attend?

California Education Code (Section 48200) and District Board Policy 5111 require that a student be enrolled in and attend the school that is within the district in which the student’s parent(s) or legal guardian(s) reside(s). Enrollment in SUSD schools is limited to families whose permanent and habitable residence falls within SUSD boundaries.

Within the City of Saratoga, there are 4 different K-8 elementary school districts: Saratoga Union School District, and portions of Campbell, Cupertino, and Moreland school districts.

Before starting the enrollment process, it is important to determine which district your property is in.

How do I learn more about each school?

Meetings for Parents/Guardians

Meet the school principals and learn about our elementary schools and Redwood Middle School. The meetings are typically held in early spring. Meetings are for parents and guardians only. We kindly request you make arrangements for childcare if necessary. Presentation materials/recordings will be posted online following the meeting.

Open Houses

During Open House, new-to-district families are welcome to visit the classrooms and campuses. Please note that teachers' priority at Open House is to interact with their current students' families.

School Information Online

Additional school information can be found on their websites and their School Accountability Report Cards. 

Families are welcome to visit school campuses AFTER school hours or on weekends to walk around the building exteriors. 

Dates for parent meetings and Open Houses will be included in your registration materials or this website.

Please note that except for Open House, all meetings are for parents and guardians only. We kindly request you make arrangements for childcare if necessary.

SUSD does not offer shadow programs at any of our schools due to liability reasons.

When will I find out what school my elementary school student has been assigned to?

For newly enrolled students, families will be notified of their TK-5 school placement in early August or a few days prior to starting school if enrolling midyear.  If you have not completed the registration process or have not cleared immunizations or the TB risk assessment, your child will not be able to attend school. 

If your child is not placed at your first choice school at the start of the school year, your student will automatically go onto a waitlist for your first choice school.  The waitlists are maintained for the first 2 weeks of school.  If your student does not move off the waitlist during the first 2 weeks, your student will complete the school year at the current school.  Waitlists are not maintained after the first 2 weeks.

Currently enrolled students may request a K-5 transfer for the following school year in January.  As a continuing student, he/she will have placement priority over any new student just moving into the district.  In most cases, we can notify you in July if the transfer can take place.  Watch your eNews for information regarding school transfer requests.

How does my child get scheduled for courses, math, and electives at Redwood Middle School? Is there testing?

New-to-district middle school students (grades 6, 7, 8) are placed into standard grade level courses for English/Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Math, and P.E. Depending on grade level, students may also select elective courses based on his/her interests and space availability. 

At the time of registration, please upload your child's most recent report card and standardized testing results into the registration system. This helps us determine appropriate course placement.

If your student needs additional support, please upload a copy of prior 504 plans or IEP.

In addition, optional math assessments will be held for new students to determine if an accelerated level of math course is appropriate for the student.  You will receive information on the optional math assessments and how to sign up when you register. Math assessments for new-to-district students typically take place in May or June. Your child must be registered with the district in order to take the math placement assessments.

Students who have completed registration and cleared immunizations may pick up their school schedule in August about 2 days before school starts. You will be notified via email about schedule pick-up dates and new student orientation.

What documents do I need to provide if I already have a child attending SUSD and am registering his/her sibling?

When registering a sibling, a new complete set of documents needs to be provided at time of preregistration. This includes all residency documents. Proofs of residency should include recent utility bills as listed in the preregistration packet.

We cannot pull old documents from a currently enrolled sibling's file.

Can I register my child over the summer?

Registration is ongoing through the summer months. Download the preregistration packet and follow the step by step instructions. The District Office will be closed during the week of July 4.

Does SUSD have a preschool?

SUSD provides Special Education preschool placement for eligible students. For more information, please contact registration@saratogausd.org.

How should my child dress for school?

Students are encouraged to dress in a way that is appropriate for school and is comfortable to be conducive to an active school day. There are no school uniforms.

What school supplies will my student need?

School supplies are provided and paid for by the school district. Students may bring a backpack or tote bag that is large enough to fit books, large format story books (TK-5), or art projects. Students who bring lunch from home may use a lunch bag or small insulated cooler bag.

Is busing available in SUSD? How do kids get to and from school?

Students are typically driven by a parent/guardian or carpool, walk, or bicycle to school. Families are encouraged to carpool when possible to ease congestion around campus during drop-off and pick up times. Busing is not available in SUSD.
