2017-2018 Community Math Study Group

The SUSD Community Math Study Group (CSMG) was convened in the 2017-2018 school year to learn, study and discuss mathematics education in the district and to formulate recommendations to the Board of Trustees and district staff.

In Fall 2017, the Board of Trustees requested that the district gather a representative group of educators and parent/community members who are passionate about mathematics. Their tasks were:

  • to recommend a process to ensure that our students are placed in the middle school math course for which they are best prepared to succeed and in which they will be challenged to learn;
  • to respect and reflect the diversity of values held by our community concerning mathematics education, and work toward consensus about math curriculum pathways and course placement guidelines in SUSD.

Parent/community members interested in participating in this study group were requested to complete and submit an application by September 20, 2017. Community Math Study Group facilitator Manny Barbara, Vice President of the Silicon Valley Education Foundation, reviewed the applications and selected participants who were representative of all four SUSD schools, had various areas of expertise and interests, and were available to attend CMSG meetings. Selected members were notified by September 27th. The first CMSG meeting was held on October 5, 2018
