Visiting Author, Oliver Chin, coming to SES on May 29! |
|
May is national "Get Caught Reading" month and "Asian American Heritage" month, and we are celebrating both by bringing local author and publisher Oliver Chin to our school. Called a "comics expert" by San Jose Mercury News, Oliver has spoken on NPR, FoxSports and Pacifica Radio, and he gives presentations nationwide. He will be spending the day at Saratoga Elementary doing assemblies and workshops. In addition, you can pre-order books written or published by Oliver Chin and 40% of the proceeds will go back to our school! Oliver will personally autograph each book and give them to the students - a great opportunity for your child to have a personal interaction with the author. Click here for an order form. This month's selection: Ruby Bridges - Through My Eyes
Project Cornerstone is an important school-wide program focused on supporting the healthy development of our children by making every effort at home, school and in the community to ensure they have the necessary building blocks to become successful, caring and responsible. For an update on Project Cornerstone programs at school, click here. Learn more about Project Cornerstone from their website. The ABC Program chose a powerful, true story this month to share with our children. Through My Eyes or Ruby Bridges both tell the story of Ruby Bridges, a six-year-old black girl who on November 14, 1960 walked through a mob of screaming segregationists escorted by Federal Marshals into her new school in New Orleans, Louisiana. Surrounded by racial turmoil, Ruby spent first grade learning to read and add with one supportive teacher. For our children, racial tensions and struggles to achieve civil rights may sound like ancient history. However, research in today’s schools shows that over the course of a year, nearly one-fourth of students across grades report that they have been harassed or bullied on school property because of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or disability. In order to promote a more caring school, we discussed what it feels like to be targeted by others because we are “different.” These discussions helped the children become aware of the hurtful effects of ridicule, scorn, name-calling, bullying, intolerance and other forms of disrespect. Students learned how it feels to walk in someone else’s shoes and to focus on performing intentional acts of caring. |

Transitional Kindergarten In SUSD |
At the May 8, 2012 Board of Trustees meeting, the board has approved the creation of a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class for the 2012-2013 school year. The TK class will the a "stand alone" class held at Argonaut Elementary School. "Stand alone" means that only children enrolled in a two-year Kindergarten program will be in this class. If your child's birthday falls between November 2 and December 2, 2007, and you are a district resident, you are eligible to enroll. Families with a "young 5 student" whose birthday falls before November 2, may enroll in TK as space permits. Director of Educational Services Diane Smalley would be happy to speak with any parent interested in Transitional Kindergarten. Please email her at
