Saratoga Scoop by Mrs. Ales

Dear Saratoga Community –

Back to School Night Resources. – Resiliency and Mindsets -- Must-reads!

At our Back to School Night I spoke of  how to build Resiliency with our kids – and I wanted to share a couple of great resources with you. First, I highly recommend the work of Dr. Robert Brooks – who has done so much research on resiliency and adults-as-champions. His website is:  http://www.drrobertbrooks.com

Another super resource is the work of Carol Dwek. Her book, Mindsets, speaks to creating “growth mindsets vs. fixed mindsets” with our kids.  Check out http://mindsetonline.com/abouttheauthor/   I referred to this when I spoke of praising effort vs. achievement.

Thank you to everyone who helped at our Family Picnic! Special thanks go to Shannon Newton and Susan Ruemmler – who served as the chairs for this event.  A wonderful time was had by all!!

Thank you!! – Julie

Science Fair Information!!

The Saratoga Elementary School Science Fair is just around the corner! A science experiment is optional for grades 3-5. We work hard to make the Science Fair a positive experience for all children. There are no awards for “best project”, just blue ribbons and an "I dared to be in the Science Fair" bracelet for everyone who participates. We hope that your child will be involved this year. Students may do projects individually or in a small group of kids from their class.

The goal is to choose a simple question about a topic he or she is interested in and then design a simple experiment to try and answer this question.  The experiment should involve making observations and recording results. Try to guide your child to a project that is in their area of interest yet within their grasp to complete with your assistance.

Important dates to remember:

  • Final Project Proposal Deadline: Fri. Nov. 21
  • Project Drop-off date: Mon. Feb. 2
  • Science Fair Presentation Day for classmates:
  • Third grade - Tues. Feb. 3
  • Fourth grade - Wed. Feb. 4
  • Fifth grade - Thurs. Feb. 5
  • Science Fair Family night -  Thurs. Feb. 5

Click here for the science fair packet -- with the proposal form!!

Thanks!! Diane Silveria

Project Cornerstone Book of the Month

What is Project Cornerstone's ABC Reader Book this month?:

This Month: 'Giraffes Can't Dance' by Giles Andreae

The two major themes present in this month's Project Cornerstone Book, “Giraffes Can’t Dance”, are friendship and embracing your own uniqueness in terms of strengths and weaknesses.

“Giraffes Can’t Dance” is a fictional story about a giraffe named Gerald, and at the annual Jungle Dance he is made fun by all the other animals because of his unique dance moves. Gerald feels alienated and alone because he cannot dance as well as the other animals. Gerald is upset and leaves the dance, when he comes across a wise cricket who offers him some advice, “sometimes when you’re different, you just need a different song”.

With this book, the Students learn about their personal power to benefit both themselves and others, and how to fill their own bucket.
