Saratoga Scoop by Mrs. Ales

Saratoga Community!!

We have a new Service Learning/Caring Community campaign underway -- and we're all set to kick things off on Monday December 1st. We are working with the Second Harvest Food Bank to create Holiday Meal Boxes for families.

Our student council randomly picked which items each classroom will bring -- and if families want to create an entire Meal Box, they are more than welcomed to do so! A flier will come home on Monday with all the details!

We'll be collecting canned corn, green beans, chili beans, cranberry sauce, bagged rice, boxes of cocoa and candy canes.  Home-made greeting cards and festive ribbons to tie up the boxes will also be accepted gladly!! Plus, we are accepting donations to also include a $20 gift card to purchase a turkey.

The students are gearing up for fun and learning -- and giving back to our community. This is always so important.

I hope you all enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones!

My best to all, Julie

Science Fair Information!!

The Saratoga Elementary School Science Fair is just around the corner! A science experiment is optional for grades 3-5. We work hard to make the Science Fair a positive experience for all children. There are no awards for “best project”, just blue ribbons and an "I dared to be in the Science Fair" bracelet for everyone who participates. We hope that your child will be involved this year. Students may do projects individually or in a small group of kids from their class.

The goal is to choose a simple question about a topic he or she is interested in and then design a simple experiment to try and answer this question.  The experiment should involve making observations and recording results. Try to guide your child to a project that is in their area of interest yet within their grasp to complete with your assistance.

Important dates to remember:

  • Final Project Proposal Deadline: Fri. Nov. 21
  • Project Drop-off date: Mon. Feb. 2
  • Science Fair Presentation Day for classmates:
  • Third grade - Tues. Feb. 3
  • Fourth grade - Wed. Feb. 4
  • Fifth grade - Thurs. Feb. 5
  • Science Fair Family night -  Thurs. Feb. 5

Please remember, everyone - to drive slowly and carefully to school. Pedestrians - please use the crosswalk.

The secret to no traffic? Come early! Kids can arrive at school at 8:10 -- and there is no traffic. Please be considerate at intersections and take turns into the queue line on Oak Street. Thank you!!

Saratoga School Garden!
Garden

We love our Garden!! Would you like to join in? Every Monday and Friday at lunch time, join in at our Garden Club!! The kids will love to see you there --

The purpose of our school garden is to give kids the opportunity to continue their learning outdoors -- to promote a healthy, earth-loving lifestyle, teach environmental stewardship, and encourage the social development of our students with a true sense of community.

The garden also creates opportunities for children to discover fresh food and make healthier choices, offering a beautiful setting to embrace every academic discipline, including science, math, reading, environmental studies, art, nutrition, and health.  Students experience a deeper understanding of natural systems and become better stewards of the Earth by designing, cultivating, and harvesting the school garden with their own hands.

Project Cornerstone Book of the Month

What is Project Cornerstone's ABC Reader Book this month?:

This Month: 'Giraffes Can't Dance' by Giles Andreae

The two major themes present in this month's Project Cornerstone Book, “Giraffes Can’t Dance”, are friendship and embracing your own uniqueness in terms of strengths and weaknesses.

“Giraffes Can’t Dance” is a fictional story about a giraffe named Gerald, and at the annual Jungle Dance he is made fun by all the other animals because of his unique dance moves. Gerald feels alienated and alone because he cannot dance as well as the other animals. Gerald is upset and leaves the dance, when he comes across a wise cricket who offers him some advice, “sometimes when you’re different, you just need a different song”.

With this book, the Students learn about their personal power to benefit both themselves and others, and how to fill their own bucket.
