Saratoga Scoop by Mrs. Ales

August 11, 2014

Dear Saratoga Families,

Welcome back to our new 2014-2015 school year! I am so looking forward to beginning my fourth year at Saratoga Elementary School – and look forward to lots of learning and fun ahead. I am excited to see everyone back at school soon! I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and fun summer.

Saratoga School Updates:

Staffing – I am very, very happy to introduce new staff at Saratoga Elementary School. Please join me in welcoming our new teachers:

Kathleen Bailey – Resource Specialist

Kathleen lives in Ben Lomond and joins Saratoga from Redwood Middle School. She originates from the Mt. Shasta area – and enjoys hiking and spending time with her kids. Kathleen has a daughter who is graduating from UCSC, a son who attends San Lorenzo Valley High, and another daughter who lives in New York -- who just had a baby -- congratulations!!

Halley Haworth -- First Grade

Halley joins us from Argonaut and Foothill where she worked in long time substitute positions. She has subbed here as well so you may recognize her!! She received her MA, Ed from UCSC, lives in Boulder Creek and likes to hike -- accompanied by her yellow Lab, Kash; she likes to cook and try out fun places to have dinner - especially with her mom.

Megan Lawson -- Fifth Grade

Megan comes from Cupertino where she taught 2 and 3rd grades. Over the summer, she and Jon Havens taught in a math enrichment summer school together! Megan loves to read, travel, and going out with friends. Megan is excited about moving forward with instructional technology and 21st Century Learning!

Additionally, Allyson Parker has joined our Second Grade Team – moving from 5th grade to 2nd. Allyson has years of experience teaching Second Grade and she will be a wonderful addition to the team!

Project Cornerstone Book of the Month

What is Project Cornerstone's ABC Reader Book this month?:

This Month:  Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

This book explores themes such as how students can identify caring adults they can turn to for support, recognize how they are supported by caring adults and how adults help them BLOOM. The lessons offer opportunities for students to practice using their "lids to keep them from wilting" -- as well as teaching the importance in both face-to-face and online communications. We follow up from last month's lesson -- highlighting courage, honesty, responsibility, integrity and perseverance.

Last Month:  The Empty Pot

This book explores the concepts of courage, honesty, responsibility, integrity and perseverance. These tools will empower students to value being true to themselves even when it is not easy. This book illustrates the importance of attitude and behavior in building character. Students will understand that the end result isn’t as important as trying your best and to trust in yourself and listen to your own judgment to make a good decision. Honesty makes trust bloom.
