Saratoga Scoop by Mrs. Ales

June 2014

Dear Saratoga Families --

Happy Summer to all our Saratoga School Families! We had a GREAT year and it was truly bittersweet to say good-bye to all our 5th graders moving on to middle school. We will miss them!!

What do to this summer? Well, I am a big fan of playing outside in the sunshine and getting lots of exercise AND a big fan of kids reading. Check out the list of most popular books checked out from our library - listed below on our website. Thank you, fab librarian, Sue Nakaji for compiling this list!

Another sweet thing to check out -- right in our neighborhood is the "Little Free Library" -- created by the Baniani Family. Here is a photo of Mrs. Obermeier and Mrs. Erickson for the ribbon cutting!

The Little Free Library is a great idea where you are free to take a book -- and then leave a book to share. This program is gaining momentum across the country. What a super idea!! You can check out the website: http://littlefreelibrary.org. The Baniani's library is located on Aloha Avenue, near Forest Hills Drive...feel free to pick up a book and leave a book. The Baniani's would appreciate any donations of elementary school age books for their library as well. Thank you Baniani Family!!

Have a great summer everyone -- see you back at school on August 18th!!   -- Julie

Project Cornerstone Book of the Month

What is Project Cornerstone's ABC Reader Book this month?:

This Month:  Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

This book explores themes such as how students can identify caring adults they can turn to for support, recognize how they are supported by caring adults and how adults help them BLOOM. The lessons offer opportunities for students to practice using their "lids to keep them from wilting" -- as well as teaching the importance in both face-to-face and online communications. We follow up from last month's lesson -- highlighting courage, honesty, responsibility, integrity and perseverance.

Last Month:  The Empty Pot

This book explores the concepts of courage, honesty, responsibility, integrity and perseverance. These tools will empower students to value being true to themselves even when it is not easy. This book illustrates the importance of attitude and behavior in building character. Students will understand that the end result isn’t as important as trying your best and to trust in yourself and listen to your own judgment to make a good decision. Honesty makes trust bloom.
