Saratoga Scoop by Mrs. Ales

April 14, 2014

Hello Saratoga Community!

It's amazing that we only have eight weeks of school left -- the days are flying by so quickly! I am sure you are aware that we are now in the midst of our Common Core practice assessments or the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC).

As you know, the Smarter-Balanced Assessment (SBAC) will become the state assessment we use to measure student progress beginning next year, and the assessment developers will use data from the field test to make adjustments. The test will also give our teachers a good idea of how well we are preparing our students for this type of test, and allow us to make adjustments to our curriculum and instruction in preparation for next year’s full implementation.

Although this is a "test of the test", it is important that students try their very best. Please set up your child for success by helping them have a good breakfast, get a good night sleep, and arrive at school on time.

SUSD has been working hard to train teachers and students on the SBAC, and I am confident that they will feel well prepared for this exciting challenge.

Thank you! Julie

Project Cornerstone Book of the Month

What is Project Cornerstone's ABC Reader Book this month?:

This Month:  Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

This book explores themes such as how students can identify caring adults they can turn to for support, recognize how they are supported by caring adults and how adults help them BLOOM. The lessons offer opportunities for students to practice using their "lids to keep them from wilting" -- as well as teaching the importance in both face-to-face and online communications. We follow up from last month's lesson -- highlighting courage, honesty, responsibility, integrity and perseverance.

Last Month:  The Empty Pot

This book explores the concepts of courage, honesty, responsibility, integrity and perseverance. These tools will empower students to value being true to themselves even when it is not easy. This book illustrates the importance of attitude and behavior in building character. Students will understand that the end result isn’t as important as trying your best and to trust in yourself and listen to your own judgment to make a good decision. Honesty makes trust bloom.
