From the June 2008 Newsletter:
Dear Parents,
I would like to begin my final newsletter of the year by saying a great big THANK YOU FOR SUCH A GREAT YEAR! It has been a very easy transition to make Redwood my new home and you have all been very welcoming. I have been so fortunate to be blessed with great students, a talented staff and such supportive parents. Redwood is truly a complete package!
If you are leaving us this year, I wish you and your student a fond farewell and much success in the future. If you and your student are returning next year, I look forward to many more great events together.
Before I sign off for the year, there are people and programs I would like to recognize:
Redwood Teacher of the Year
This year’s Redwood Teacher of the Year selected by her peers is Mrs.Vicki Wyant. Mrs. Wyant was chosen because of her hours of service to the school and her students. With over 250 students in her program, Mrs. Wyant consistently delivers a quality music program unmatched by any other group in the state. As testimony to this her Advanced Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Jazz Dancers, Percussion Ensemble and Honor Choir all brought home gold awards and received the overall sweepstakes at the Heritage Festival in southern California two weekends ago. Congratulations Vicki!
Starfish Awards
Throughout the year, a number of staff members were awarded a “Starfish” award for making a difference in the lives of their students and their peers The following is the list this year’s recipients:
August: Anne Kolb
September: Harry Dill
October: Teri Brandt
November: James Conn
December: Mary Thomas
January: Markus Puhvel
February: Josh Henig
March: Gail Inlow
April: Debbie Yakulis
May: Jason Engilis
June: Vicki Wyant
Redwood Chess Team
The Redwood Chess team did it again! Last weekend, over 1,00 scholastic chess players competed in San Jose at the annual CalChess Scholastic tournament. Our team took first place in the 7-8 varsity team section by beating local teams in very competitive matches. Congratulations to the following team members: Kevin Garbe, Sankash Shankar, Brian Wai, and Evan Ye. Special thanks to the student team coaches, David Chock, Charles Sun, Jeff Young, and coach and chess master Michael Aigner.
Honk!
Congratulations to the casts of Honk for another great musical and to all of the parents who worked such long hours to provide Redwood with a musical.
Saratoga Volunteer of the Year
Redwood’s own Katherine Tseng was selected as the Saratoga Union School District’s Volunteer of the Year. Katherine’s involvement with programs district wide is admirable. Just to name a few, she sits on the board of the Saratoga Education Foundation and is a member of the district budget committee. At Redwood she is a member of our School Site council, Parent Teacher Association and a music Booster President. Katherine can be seen on any given day volunteering her time here and in the community. Congratulations Katherine and thanks for all of hard work!
Staff Farewells
We bid farewell to several of our staff members this year and wish them a safe and happy journey in their new endeavors: Christine Coelho, Jason Engilis, Caitlin Hoffman, Katherine Lighty, Holly Nakashima, and Frannie Pierce.
On behalf of the Redwood Staff, I would like to wish you a wonderful summer full of joy and adventure. As a Santa Cruz girl, I am looking forward to some time at the beach! Maybe I will “sea” you there!
Sincerely,
Kelly Green, Principal
